FAQs
About Circumcision
Is adult circumcision common?
Adult circumcision is performed for a range of medical, personal hygiene, and personal preference reasons and is a well-established day procedure.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is required. You can contact our clinic directly to book a consultation.
How long is the recovery?
As a general guide, initial healing takes approximately 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients return to office work within a few days. A general guide for resuming sexual activity is approximately 4 to 6 weeks. Individual recovery times vary.
What does circumcision cost in Canberra?
The consultation is $285 (Medicare rebate $84.90, out-of-pocket $200.10). The procedure fee is $2,700, which includes three post-operative visits. A Medicare rebate may apply for medical indications. See our Cost and Fees page.
Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. Individual experiences vary. Most patients experience mild discomfort during the early recovery period, manageable with standard pain relief. Your doctor will provide guidance specific to your situation.
FAQs
About Phimosis
What is phimosis and how do I know if I have it?
Phimosis is a condition where the foreskin cannot be fully retracted. Common signs include difficulty retracting the foreskin, pain during erections, and recurrent irritation or infections. A consultation is needed for proper assessment and diagnosis.
Does phimosis always require surgery?
Not always. Treatment depends on severity and individual circumstances, assessed at consultation. Conservative options may be appropriate for some patients.
FAQs
About Frenuloplasty
What is a tight frenulum?
The frenulum is a small band of tissue on the underside of the penis. When shorter or tighter than usual, it can cause pain, a pulling sensation, or recurrent tearing. A consultation allows for proper assessment.
How is frenuloplasty different from circumcision?
Frenuloplasty addresses only the tight frenulum without removing the foreskin. It is generally a shorter procedure. Your doctor will advise which treatment is most appropriate.
FAQs
About Fordyce Spots Treatment
What are Fordyce spots?
Fordyce spots are small, harmless sebaceous (oil) glands that can appear on the skin of the penis or genital region. They are a common and completely benign condition — not sexually transmitted, not infectious, and not cancerous. They are considered a normal anatomical variation.
Do Fordyce spots need to be treated?
No. Fordyce spots are harmless and treatment is not medically necessary. However, some men seek treatment for cosmetic reasons or due to self-consciousness. Dr Van will assess your situation and discuss realistic expectations at consultation.
What treatment is used for Fordyce spots?
Where treatment is requested, Dr Van may use the Ellman radiofrequency device, which targets lesions with high-frequency radio waves while minimising damage to surrounding tissue. Treatment is tailored to the individual based on the number, size, and location of lesions.
How much does Fordyce spots treatment cost?
The consultation fee is $250. Treatment fees are confirmed at consultation. Fordyce spots treatment is elective and Medicare rebates do not apply. See our Cost and Fees page.
FAQs
About Pearly Penile Papules (PPP)
What are pearly penile papules?
Pearly penile papules (PPP) are small, harmless skin-coloured or white bumps that typically appear around the corona of the glans penis. They are considered a normal anatomical variation, are not sexually transmitted, not contagious, and not related to poor hygiene.
Are PPP the same as genital warts?
No. Pearly penile papules are not genital warts and are not caused by HPV. They are benign and entirely unrelated to any sexually transmitted infection. If you are unsure about any skin change, a consultation allows for accurate assessment and diagnosis.
Can PPP be removed?
Yes. Treatment using the Ellman radiofrequency device may reduce the appearance of PPP. Treatment is elective and not medically necessary. Dr Van will assess suitability and discuss risks and expected outcomes at your consultation.
What is the consultation fee for PPP treatment?
The consultation fee is $250, payable at the time of booking. This is non-refundable in the event of a no-show or cancellation with less than 3 days’ notice. Treatment fees are confirmed at consultation. Medicare rebates do not apply to elective cosmetic procedures.
